CANTIGNY WHEATON WEDDING: CHICAGO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER: MELISSA MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY: RYAN + LAUREN

A First Look in a Home That Is Not Finished Yet, and That Is Exactly Why It Was Perfect

As a wedding photographer I get to witness so many beautiful moments. Some happen in grand ballrooms and some happen under twinkle lights or in the middle of a forest. But every now and then I get to photograph something that feels like the beginning of a legacy. That is exactly what happened when this bride and groom chose to have their first look at their new home.

And by new, I mean new to them. It is a work in progress. A place with walls that will be painted and floors that will be replaced. A yard waiting to be shaped into what they imagine. It is far from finished, but that is what made it so incredibly special.

Instead of waiting for the perfect version of their home, they chose to start making memories now. They stood in a place that will hold so many chapters of their life and let it become part of their story from day one. I love that. I love that they did not wait for “someday” or “when it is ready.” They claimed this space as part of their marriage, imperfections and all.

Their first look was quiet and emotional. The soft light coming through the trees. The way they looked at one another, knowing that this house will someday hold future holidays, late night talks, maybe children running through the hallways, and all the tiny everyday moments that make a life.

This home is going to change. It will grow with them and become an extension of who they are. But ten, twenty, thirty years from now, they will be able to look back at these photos and remember that before the renovations, before the design choices, before the transformation, they stood in this very spot and were about to make the best decision of their life.
